Plantronics was born in an American garage in 1961 when two airline pilots set out to invent an alternative to the conventional headsets of commercial aviation. Over 55 years' worth of audio and collaboration innovation are embedded into Plantronics products. A portfolio of integrated solutions spans headsets, software, desk phones, audio and video conferencing, and analytics and services, providing partners and customers with the tools and technologies needed to create and offer the most focused and distraction-free environments possible.

Plantronics made history when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and uttered those legendary words: through a Plantronics headset.
In the mid-1960s, the Federal Aviation Agency selected Plantronics as the sole supplier of headsets for air traffic controllers and thereafter was selected to supply headsets to the operators of the Bell Telephone company.

Polycom was founded in 1990 in San Francisco, California, with a stated goal to develop solutions for all the major ways people communicate, specifically including audio, content such as documents, and video. Polycom's first products to market were audio conferencing speakerphones - SoundStation, a triangular speakerphone with unusually robust full-duplex audio allowing both parties to speak and be heard simultaneously. SoundStation and its successor, SoundStation Premier, became the leading brand in the market in the 1990s.

From 1998, Polycom expanded its portfolio with video conferencing products. First and one of the most popular products was ViewStation, the set-top unit which integrated a PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera with codec and communication electronics. Other members of the ViewStation product line included models with embedded multipoint capabilities, content sharing capabilities, and support for the emerging H.323 IP network protocol. Later, the company added content sharing, video conferencing, network and bridging, and system monitoring and management products. In the next ten years, Polycom, through its own R&D and series of company acquisitions, becomes the world's most prominent player in the field of secure and reliable, multipoint bridging videoconferencing systems.

On March 28, 2018, Plantronics acquired Polycom for approximately 2 billion dollars. With the addition of Polycom's solutions across video, audio, and collaboration, Plantronics can deliver a comprehensive portfolio of communications and collaboration touch points and services to customers and channel partners.

In 2019 the name of the combined entity was changed to Poly, which offers an unparalleled portfolio of integrated, intelligent solutions that spans headsets, software, desk phones, audio and video conferencing, and cloud services. As trends in enterprise communications move toward open workspaces and flexible work arrangements, the ecosystem of platforms and devices continues to expand.
